Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Hanei, the pilot, and how it works for your brand.

1About Hanei and the pilot
Hanei is a platform that connects brands directly with independent convenience stores, giving brands control over in-store digital campaigns and listings without going through intermediaries.
The pilot is designed to prove that when brands of all sizes can (1) run campaigns at the point of sale using real-time store data and (2) engage directly with store owners, they can grow their rate of sale, expand distribution, protect margins, and gain closed-loop feedback on product and trade performance.
The pilot is open to brands of all sizes: micro brands, regional brands, and established national brands already listed with major retailers or wholesalers. The common thread is a desire to grow through independent and convenience channels more efficiently and transparently.
The initial focus is independent convenience stores, with a roadmap to scale into the thousands.
With 50,000+ stores and many shoppers visiting convenience around three times a week, bringing independents into a single data‑driven network unlocks incremental distribution, sales and closed‑loop in‑store insight.
2What Hanei offers to brands
Hanei enables your brand to (1) run targeted digital campaigns in independent stores, using store-level performance and audience data, (2) engage with store owners directly through the platform to agree commercial terms and secure new or support existing listings, and (3) engage with shoppers through the Hanei rewards app, to run your own promotions and measure their impact in real time.
In an early pilot with a premium frozen alcoholic sorbet brand that had struggled to sell in store, rate of sale moved from zero to seven units per week in the first store within the first week of advertising, materially ahead of its usual two to three units in comparable outlets. This result is an example, not a guaranteed benchmark, but it demonstrates the potential of point-of-sale, data-informed media in independents.
Yes. Established brands can use Hanei to (a) build breadth and depth in independents and smaller chains, (b) test new products and formats in a lower-risk, data-rich environment, and (c) support specific SKUs or missions that are under-served. Several brands in the pilot are already listed with national retailers, and larger grocers but want a smarter way to grow independents.
3How the in-store media works
Hanei installs large digital screens, typically 55 inches and scalable down to c.32 inches, near the store entrance or till, and also uses a secondary screen on the back of the till via a POS partner. Stores are selected based on a minimum footfall threshold, ensuring meaningful audience reach.
The pilot starts in London and surrounding regions, with a plan for rapid national deployment as the network proves out. The store mix prioritises independents and symbol-format convenience outlets with relevant shopper profiles for participating brands.
Hanei combines real-time till data (rate of sale, basket information), historic store performance, inventory data, postcode-level affluence and demographics, and, over time, non-PII in-store audience signals derived from CCTV (e.g. dwell, gender split). In the pilot, till and store data are the primary inputs, with some of the more advanced audience analytics such as CCTV are phased in progressively.
No. Our audience analytics roadmap is designed to be fully GDPR-compliant and strictly excludes any use of personally identifiable information, biometric data, facial recognition or re-identification; it only generates aggregated insights such as counts, dwell time and broad demographic patterns, never individual consumer profiles.
Brands can run as many campaigns and creatives as they wish within the pilot, including manual A/B tests by store, messaging, or format. You can choose to support existing listings, launch into new independents, or test different value propositions across distinct store clusters.
4Commercial model and commitment
Participation in the pilot is 100% free for brands: there are no media fees, license costs, or listing charges from Hanei during the pilot period.
Hanei asks for three things: (1) candid feedback on the product and process, (2) permission to use successful outcomes as case studies with your approval rights, and (3) empathy: as a high‑growth startup we will be iterating at pace and may not get everything right first time, but we will always be transparent, responsive and focused on improving the experience for your brand.
The pilot runs from August to November: onboarding takes place in August, campaigns go live in September, and wrap-up at the end of October. Screens and data infrastructure are installed and validated ahead of go-live, and brands are onboarded in August so campaigns can run continuously from September across the pilot period.
After the pilot, brands can keep using Hanei and earn referral credits that let them access the platform for free for a limited period.” You earn credits by referring independent stores or retailers where you’re already listed; once a retailer agrees to join, the credit is automatically added to your account, and you can refer by emailing hicham@hanei.uk with the subject line “Store/Retail referral from Brand [Your Brand]”, ahead of our planned commercial launch in Q1 2027 (post‑pilot referral credits available for a limited time; terms apply).
In steady state (post-pilot), brands pay Hanei a subsription fee; Hanei funds and operates the screen network and data infrastructure; and a share of Hanei's revenues flows to store owners as net margin income in exchange for data and media real estate.
5Listings, wholesalers and store relationships
For sales impact and shopper experience, Hanei strongly recommends – and will generally expect – that your product is available in any store where you choose to advertise, to avoid wasted demand and consumer frustration. Brands are encouraged to start with a small number of stores and a manageable volume to prove the model before scaling.
Hanei adds an optional, data‑driven activation layer with participating stores, designed to complement rather than replace your existing routes to market.
No – Hanei is not a wholesaler and does not insert itself into your commercial terms; it provides the infrastructure and audience for you to reach and trade with stores more efficiently. Some brands may choose, over time, to supplement or partially replace existing model investments if they see stronger unit economics through direct store relationships on the platform.
During the pilot, some brands may choose to send a limited number of product samples to Hanei so we can help list those lines with participating stores and reduce friction for both sides.” “However, our storage capacity is deliberately small, we cannot handle products with short shelf life or specialist handling requirements.
Because Hanei is connected to store tills and tracks prices and sales in real time, it can validate that agreed promotional prices were executed and that consumers received the intended benefit. The roadmap includes closed-loop mechanisms such as rewards cards and receipt validation to further tighten the link between brand investment and shopper outcome.
6Data, insight and brand control
Brands will see store-level performance data for participating outlets, including rate of sale, promotional uplift, and comparative performance across stores and campaigns. Over time, this will be enriched with aggregated audience insights (e.g. time of day patterns, mission types) to help you refine targeting, creative and commercial strategy.
One of the core problems Hanei was created to solve is the lack of predictability and transparency in trade and retail media investment: brands ship stock and are later told that rate of sale under-performed and more spend is required. By putting store performance and promotional data directly in your hands across a fragmented channel, Hanei aims to reduce uncertainty, improve profitability forecasting, and provide evidence for both internal and retailer conversations.
No. The platform is being designed so that brand teams can build and deploy campaigns themselves, in a workflow more akin to self-serve social platforms than to traditional out-of-home buying, with AI-enabled support for content creation and optimisation. You are of course free to use agencies if you prefer, but they are not a requirement.
The pilot has been set up to require minimal operational time from brands: upload existing or adapted assets, select target stores, confirm or arrange product availability, and review performance. Most brands handle this within normal trade, shopper, or founder time without dedicated incremental headcount.
7Onboarding and practicalities
Once you (1) submit your brand data, (2) you will receive an email with the pilot agreement for your review and signature, (3) you can then book your onboarding call, and (4) start using the platform.
Hanei will ask for essentials such as: priority SKUs, current distribution footprint, recommended consumer selling price, category and target shopper, any existing creative assets, and your specific objectives for the pilot (e.g. rate-of-sale uplift, new listings, new product test). For logistics support, you may also agree quantities, delivery details, and any handling requirements.
Yes. One of the platform's core principles is that brands choose the stores that best fit their strategy, based on data such as store performance, shopper affluence, and category mix. You are not required to be "everywhere" and can start with a small number of highly relevant outlets before expanding.
You will have direct contact with the Hanei team for onboarding, platform questions, and troubleshooting, while commercial negotiations with individual stores can be handled via the platform.
Success will look different by brand, but common metrics include: uplift in rate of sale in participating stores, number and quality of new listings secured, strength of economics versus existing channels, and the clarity and usability of the data provided. Hanei will work with you upfront to define what "good" looks like for your brand specifically.
